Leave No Trace: 5 Principles Every Camper Should Follow

Camping is about enjoying the great outdoors—without leaving your mark behind. Discover the core principles of Leave No Trace and how you can help protect our parks, forests, and waterfronts for future generations.

Dispose of Waste Properly

Make sure all trash and food waste are properly disposed of in trash cans or otherwise tightly packed in your tent or camper. Inspect your campsite thoroughly for any loose trash. If you have to wash dishes without a sink, carry water 200 feet away from the river and use a small amount of biodegradable soap to keep our waterways clean.

Leave What You Find

Leave the natural landscapes around you in the same condition you found them. Don’t take rocks or plants; don’t dig or build structures; avoid introducing non-native species. Instead, examine and photograph from a distance – take in the nature around you while keeping the local ecosystems intact.

Minimize Campfire Impacts

Build your campfires in the designated fire rings at Camp Cardinal, taking extra care to keep them small. When you’re done, burn all wood and coals to ash and put out your campfires completely. You help minimize the chance of wildfires and keep your campsite safe.

Respect Wildlife

One of the many joys of camping is observing the wildlife. Be careful to watch from a distance – never follow or approach them. Never feed them, either – feeding wildlife impacts their health, alters their behavior, and poses potential danger to you. Secure your trash and keep your pets leashed to make sure you and the animal stay safe.

Be Considerate of Other Visitors

Remember – you aren’t the only one camping. Be respectful of the other campers; keep noise levels low, contain your gear to your site, and be polite to your campsite neighbor.
