Meet the Makers: Matthew Meyer of Gauthier

A lineup of wines at Gauthier Vineyard, one of the stops at Virginia Wine Camp.

Camp Cardinal’s Virginia Wine Camp is your backstage pass to the people behind the pour — the passionate winemakers leading the way across Virginia’s wine scene. In this Meet the Makers spotlight, we introduce you to one of the most respected names in the industry: Matthew Meyer, Head Winemaker and Chief Operating Officer at Gauthier Vineyard

Located in Barhamsville, just a short drive from Camp Cardinal, Gauthier Vineyard is a family-run gem producing handcrafted wines from its estate vineyard in the Virginia Peninsula AVA as well as a variety of wines from its partner vineyard in the famed Shenandoah Valley — one of the Commonwealth’s most revered grape growing regions.

In 2024, the Gauthier welcomed Meyer to lead both winemaking and day-to-day operations — ushering in a new era of excellence for the boutique winery.

Bringing a Global Perspective to Virginia Wine

Meyer brings more than experience — he brings a global perspective, a keen palate, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity. His journey began in the heart of Napa Valley, where he cultivated his craft at some of California’s top wineries. Since then, his work has taken him around the world, including to Gerardo Cartellone’s A16 Bodega near Mendoza, Argentina. There, Meyer created “Reflective,” a premium Malbec that showcases his refined blending skills and deep respect for terroir.

Back in the U.S., Meyer played an instrumental role in elevating the profile of the Williamsburg Winery, one of the Commonwealth’s most storied and acclaimed wineries. As head winemaker, Meyer’s wines earned multiple 90+ ratings, and in 2014, he was awarded a Virginia Governor’s Cup —the state’s highest honor in winemaking — for the 2010 vintage of Adagio, a signature Virginia wine.

Today, Meyer’s approach — hands-on, detail-focused, and terroir-driven — perfectly complements the Gauthier family’s vision to produce wines that celebrate Virginia’s natural beauty and rich agricultural heritage.
